why south alabama?
South Alabama is a community of small cities where
people enjoy living and working. The pace is obviously more
moderated than one finds in the big cities, but the big cities
are not so far away that they can’t be visited in a short quick
trip. New Orleans, Atlanta, Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and
Pensacola are all within easy driving distance, and any city
more distant can be reach with easy access by air from any of
these points.
The common thread that holds South Alabama together as
an economic and social unit is a network of roads and highways,
making it easy for individuals and businesses to visit, commute
and interact within the larger community. Interstate I-65
moves traffic quickly south from Greenville through Georgiana
and Evergreen, and by Brewton to Atmore. US 84 is the primary
East-West Highway which moves traffic efficiently from Opp and
Andalusia on the east, through Evergreen, to Monroeville on the
west.
Each city and county within the South Alabama community
provides uniqueness that gives diversity to the whole, and yet
there are common bonds and interests which provide feelings of
closeness and security. More recently South Alabama
obtained a major tube of bonding glue when an FM radio station
operating in Evergreen increased its power to 100,000-watts.
WPGG covers the entire area with a strong signal. All in all,
its a great place to do business.
EVERGREEN, the central city in the five county community, is
also the transportation hub for an even larger area of South
Alabama and Northwest Florida. More than 800 people earn their
living in the transportation industry, and most of these work in
trucking. The I-65/US 84 juncture provides quick and easy
access and egress for 21 trucking companies. Evergreen and
Conecuh County are known worldwide for window decorations and
floral designs.
MONROEVILLE is well respected throughout Alabama for its dynamic
community spirit, and its dedication to attracting good
manufacturing and other industrial jobs. While the city
provides leadership for a strong economy, many workers commute
long distances from rural areas of Monroe and adjacent counties.
Monroeville, home for two famous American writers,
Harper Lee
and Truman Capote, works hard at encouraging development of
cultural and arts opportunities as well as businesses. The
state legislature recently designated Monroeville as the
literary capital of Alabama. Located only a short distance from
the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers, Monroeville is a haven for
those who enjoy inland waterways.
GREENVILLE is one of those communities which experienced a
rebirth by exploiting its closeness to the Interstate Highway
System. Located only 45 miles south of the State Capital it has
the elements of a bedroom community, and yet it is developing a
nationwide identity. The growth of service businesses at its
primary I-65 exit makes it one of the most popular stops and
stop-overs for travelers on the "Canada/Midwest-to-Florida
Turnpike". The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail goes right to
Cambrian Ridge in Greenville. In fact, that course has been
deemed to be one of the best new golfing facilities in the
nation. But there is more to Greenville and Butler County. The Hank
Williams Sr. Museum is located at the famous singer/songwriter’s
early childhood home in Georgiana, only fifteen miles south.
BREWTON was recently recognized as one of the best small cities
in America. And once a newcomer drives around town and
discovers the one place where beautiful old homes have been
kept up he will understand why the judges were impressed.
Brewton is a business city, with attractive shopping centers
and a complete range of retail stores and wholesale support
businesses. Small businesses, both new and old, thrive in this
hustling-bustling community. Brewton and the city of Atmore,
located about 30 miles closer to Mobile, comprise the bulk of
the urban popular for Escambia County.
ANDALUSIA is the largest city and Covington is the largest
county in the South Alabama community. Andalusia is
recognized for having some of the best public schools in the
state. It has excellent recreational facilities at nearby
inland waterways, and its a favorite stop along the
non-interstate routes to Panama City and Ft. Walton Beach
resorts. Andalusia and its sister cities, of Opp and Florala,
work tirelessly to make doing business in Covington County
profitable and enjoyable. For more information about Andalusia,
